BROOMFIELD, Colo.—A memorial service is scheduled Friday in Broomfield for a Colorado man who fell more than 400 feet Saturday from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

The National Park Service has ruled the death of 62-year-old B. Holt Vaughn an accident.

Park Service spokeswoman Maureen Oltrogge said Thursday that Vaughn had strayed off a paved trail in the popular tourist area near Mather Point, got too close to the edge and slipped over during a visit with his family.

The Park Service says the Grand Canyon draws more than 5 million visitors a year, and about three people a year die in falls there.

Vaughn was a Vietnam veteran and will be buried at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
