Legendary Regis University men’s basketball coach Lonnie Porter will have to wait at least another day to notch his 500th career victory.
Cold shooting by the Rangers’ backcourt was too much to overcome Friday night in a 76-64 loss to visiting Adams State (3-3). Regis dropped to 2-1. The Rangers host Fort Lewis at 5 p.m. today.
“We tried hard, but we didn’t play well and we didn’t play smart,” said Porter, who is in his 33rd season at Regis. “It was one of those nights for our guards. They got frustrated, and the harder they tried, the more frustrated they got.
“I just want to get (No. 500) over with.”

Schaub’s title fight airs tonight.
The general public will learn tonight if former Overland High and University of Colorado football player Brendan Schaub is the next Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight contender.
Schaub, 26, made it to the finals of “Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights,” a television reality series filmed last summer in Las Vegas. His title fight against Roy “Big Country” Nelson will be shown in tonight’s final episode on Spike TV (7 p.m. MST).
The fight had a “six-figure” UFC contract on the line. The 264-pound Nelson, a former International Fight League heavyweight champion who trains out of Las Vegas, is an overweight ground fighter. He undoubtedly tried to take the 240-pound Schaub to the canvas.
Schaub’s strength is stand-up combat, using his boxing, karate and quickness to land blows.
In the final Wednesday episode this week, Schaub was shown defeating Marcus Jones in the semifinals by first-round referee stoppage. He previously dropped Jon Madsen in Episode 9 with a second- round knockout. In Episode 4, his anaconda choke forced Demico Rogers to tap out in the first round.
Schaub, who lives in the Denver area, trains out of Wheat Ridge’s Grudge Training Center. Mike Chambers, The Denver Post
