A fugitive from Fort Collins was arrested in Belize Friday after the case against him was aired on the TV show “America’s Most Wanted” on Nov. 28.

Authorities had been looking for Robert Snyder, 55, a convicted child molester, since August 2008, until tips to the TV show’s hotline led to his capture.

A chess champion, author on the subject and a teacher, police said he preyed on young boys he was coaching, including the son of a woman he befriended at chess tournaments and later married. He was arrested in 2005.

Fort Collins police said today he was living in Belize City under a false name and was tutoring children in chess at a local elementary school.

He was arrested by Belize City police, and government authorities there are making arrangements to deport him into U.S. custody, Fort Collins police said.

Snyder served most of a two-year sentence in the Larimer County Detention Center but disappeared after he was released, failing to serve the 10 years of supervised probation and register as a sex offender.

In 1983 Snyder was acquitted of child molestation charges in California, records show.
