BOULDER, Colo.—Boulder says the U.S. Census Bureau has revised its population estimate for the city from 94,171 to 99,466, which could mean more money for the city from grants based on population.

Boulder had challenged the 2008 estimate of its population. City staff members contend estimates have been off since the decennial census in 2000, which they say didn’t count new housing units and underestimated people living in group quarters like University of Colorado dorms.

The city estimates its population is around 102,800. Still, City Manager Jane Brautigam says she is excited by the revised Census Bureau estimate.

The state demographer estimates that Colorado could get $880 for each person counted in the decennial census next year.
