LINCOLN, Neb.—The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says now is a great time to go ice fishing and those with the right equipment may have the best luck of all.

Daryl Bauer, the commission’s fisheries outreach program manager, says a good pair of boots rated for temperatures well below zero and other clothes to keep warm and dry are essential. He recommends carrying at least a few pairs of gloves or mittens and dressing in layers. A life jacket is a good idea, too.

He says ice augers make the job of cutting holes in the ice easier. The important thing is to keep the blades sharp.

Fish metabolism rates are slower during the winter, so Bauer says think small and light for most ice-fishing tackle. Bauer says a child’s sled works well to haul equipment onto the ice.
