University of Colorado leaderswith grand green goals for the dorms — are exploring whether to install shower timers that either shut off the water or give students an audio warning about how long they’ve been scrubbing.
The shower timers will likely get an initial test run in Baker Hall, the home of several eco-friendly students who are enrolled in a residential academic program that focuses on environmental sciences.
Leaders at CU’s Boulder campus — lauded by Sierra Magazine as the No. 1 green college in the country — say green habits and lifestyles often begin in the dorms with freshmen living on their own for the first time. Students are challenged to rethink their consumption habits, everything from how much time they spend in the showers to the amount of electricity their gadgets suck up.
And, there are challenges for residence life leaders: Teaching first-year students that flushing Ramen Noodles down the toilet is not actually composting, and addressing the age-old problem of students opening their dorm windows in winter months, causing temperature-sensitive heaters to work extra hard.
