ERIE, Colo.—Authorities say about 20 alpacas died in a weekend barn fire in Erie.

A group of volunteer firefighters happened to be holding a holiday party just a couple miles away when the blaze happened at about 7 p.m. Saturday but the barn collapsed just as firefighters arrived.

Mountain View Fire Protection District spokesman Jesse Hodgson says the firefighters saved six alpacas and prevented the fire from spreading to a nearby house.

The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known.
