Southwest Airlines, as part of a plan to continue growth in Denver, announced Wednesday it will add flights in May and August.

Nine daily flights and one Saturday-only flight to New York’s LaGuardia Airport will be launched May 9. Two daily nonstops — Spokane, Wash., and Tampa, Fla. — are in addition to new Denver flights that were announced in October.

Southwest will add 15 more flights out of Denver in August, with those details to be released in February.

“Denver continues to respond exceptionally well to our growth and service in the Mile High City, and as a result, we’ll continue to add flights,” Southwest chief executive Gary Kelly said in a statement.

Southwest acquired two gates at Denver International Airport, C33 and C34, on Nov. 1, bringing its total to 12.

Southwest and DIA officials said they are continuing to work together on additional needs to accommodate Southwest’s growth but that nothing has been finalized.

Southwest is DIA’s third-largest airline, and Denver is Southwest’s fifth- largest market.

Southwest began service to Denver on Jan. 3, 2006, with 13 daily nonstop departures to three destinations.

With the May additions, Southwest will operate 129 daily flights out of Denver, and by August, the Dallas-based carrier will have 144 flights out of Denver to 43 cities.
