OTTAWA — Senators center Jason Spezza will miss six to eight weeks with a torn ligament in his right knee.

The team announced Spezza’s status Wednesday after an MRI on Tuesday night showed damage to his medial collateral ligament.

Spezza was injured during the third period of a 3-2 loss to Toronto on Monday. He got tangled up with Leafs forward Lee Stempniak during a faceoff and had to leave the game. He has five goals and 14 assists in 30 games.

NHL considering outdoor game for Canadian teams

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — The NHL is considering adding a Winter Classic outdoor game for Canadian teams.

So far the league’s annual outdoor game on New Year’s Day has matched up teams from American cities with strong hockey followings. Adding Canadian teams was considered for 2010, but it didn’t happen.

“It’s something we’re going to look at for next season,” commissioner Gary Bettman said. “We’ll see if we can make that happen.”

The Bruins and Flyers are scheduled to play at Fenway Park on Jan. 1.
