DENVER—Denver airport officials say a contract worker died after falling into about 20 feet of water at the bottom of a 40-foot-deep pit at the airport’s heating and cooling plant.

The man fell Saturday morning and his body was recovered later in the day by Denver Police Department divers. His name hasn’t been released.

Denver International Airport spokesman Jeff Green says the man was a paint inspector working for an outside company under contract with the airport.

Green says airport officials aren’t certain how he fell.

The pit opening is about 4 feet by 8 feet.

Denver police were investigating.
