BASALT, Colo.—Police are investigating the carbon monoxide poisoning of two people at a home in Basalt.

A man and a woman were found unconscious in their bed Thursday by another couple staying in the house. They were hospitalized but are expected to recover.

Police say the carbon monoxide came from a car that had been left running in an attached, closed garage. They don’t suspect foul play but say the incident has some puzzling aspects.

The car had run out of gas and the battery was nearly dead but the ignition was still on when police found it. A carbon monoxide detector had been removed from the hallway outside the victims’ bedroom and was found under their bed without a battery.

A Denver family of four died of carbon monoxide poisoning near Aspen last Thanksgiving weekend.
