About 100 people were forced out of their apartments after a pipe froze and split at a Commerce City apartment complex.

The American Red Cross told 9News it happened at the Highland Legend Apartments on East 72nd Avenue in Commerce City around 10:30 a.m. Commerce City Emergency Manager Alan Colon told the television station the pipe broke near the boiler room, so the residents had no heat or hot water.

The Red Cross opened Kearney Middle School as a shelter, but most people stayed with family or friends.
