Friday’s incident involving a Detroit-bound flight caused many commentators to recall the unsuccessful “shoe bomber” attack that took place during the holidays in 2001. Richard Reid, now 36, also known as Abdul Raheem and as Tariq Raja, is serving a term of life without parole in Colorado’s SuperMax prison near Florence. Reid was arrested Dec. 22, 2001, for allegedly attempting to destroy a Boeing 767 on American Airlines Flight 63, a flight from Paris to Miami, by igniting explosives hidden in his shoes.
