“On a Dark, Dark Night,” by Sara B. Pierce, illustrated by Rebecca S. Langue and Ellen Schultz, L.E.V.I. publishers ($16.95)

The story, in rhyme, follows a troubled polar bear family from the incident that causes Papa Bear to “spend time alone” to the fragile peace Mama Bear and Cub build in his absence.
