Before dawn on Dec. 30, 2008, Brian Mahon left for work like any other morning — hoping to sneak in a run at Eldora Mountain Resort before focusing on the ski area’s day-to-day operations.
“We’re still kind of waiting for him to come home,” said Jill Mahon, his wife of 20 years.
It’s been a year since Mahon, who was Eldora’s general manager, was shot and killed by a lift operator at the Boulder County ski area in what authorities said was a random act of violence.
Jill Mahon called his death a “heartbreaking, irreplaceable loss” and said her family is going through the motions of life but still dealing with their grief every day.
Dec. 30, 2008, was supposed to be one of the busiest days of the ski season, but Brian Mahon had insisted director of operations Dave Hunter take his scheduled day off.
When Hunter’s phone rang about 7:30 a.m., he expected to hear Mahon’s familiar chuckle and friendly ribbing. But the call was from someone else at the resort.
“You need to get here,” the person told Hunter. “A lift operator shot Brian.”
