GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Sen. Michael Bennet says that the health care overhaul that passed the Senate last week is “better than the status quo.”

The Democratic senator told a group of health care workers at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction that the Senate version is not perfect. But Bennet insisted it is better than doing nothing.

Mesa County has been hailed as a national leader in keeping health costs down, and Bennet was in Grand Junction to talk about an amendment he added to the bill. The amendment aims to reduce the chance patients have to return to the hospital after being released.

The senator was headed to Durango Sunday to talk with small business owners about the economy. Congress returns to work Jan. 19.
