Getting your player ready...

We hear Southwest Airlines is offering one-way tickets to Boston for $89. More good news: If your luggage includes an ugly, half-sleeve Broncos hoodie, your bag flies free.

Hasta la vista, Coach McDaniels.

Of course, we’re kidding. We don’t want to send Josh McDaniels packing. Not yet, anyway.

But the angst in apountry is palpable this week. And why not?

Not only did the team suffer one of the most monumental collapses since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 (only two other teams have started 6-0 in the past 40 years and failed to make the playoffs), the Broncos ended the season as a house divided.

The young, over-confident coach lost control of his team, and alienated many of the players brought into the program by previous coach Mike Shanahan. And unfortunately for Broncos fans, as Denver Post columnist Dave Krieger pointed out, McDaniels’ players aren’t very good.

So just as Brandon Marshall and Tony Scheffler did on Sunday, the Broncos will sit at home for the playoffs for the fourth straight year.

Owner Pat Bowlen was right to show Shanahan the door after years of mediocre football. But instead of hiring a proven head coach, the Broncos went the cheap route (should have figured, given the team’s inexpensive, no-frills halftime shows) and hired a youngster to fill big sneakers. Now we’re stuck with the brooding McHoodie.

But buck up: Nothing ages a guy quicker than the collective angst of angry Broncos fans weighing on your shoulders. Let’s just hope wisdom replaces some of that unearned arrogance.
