Durango’s Tad Elliott finished a surprising second at the U.S. cross country ski championships Monday in Anchorage, Alaska, covering the 15-kilometer freestyle course in 37 minutes, 42.1 seconds.
Elliott was about 25 seconds behind Kris Freeman of Andover, N.H., who won in 37:17.6. But the 21-year- old Elliott, who races mountain bikes during the summer for USA Cycling, started in the B group, a second flight of what should have been slower skiers.
Elliott’s previous best finish in the event was ninth. Kikkan Randall of Anchorage won the women’s 10K freestyle in 28:40.1.

New UNLV football coach Bobby Hauck hired seven assistants, including ex-Colorado players Ty Gregorak (who will coach linebackers) and Cedric Cormier (receivers). Former Wyoming assistants Rob Phenicie (offensive coordinator) and Chad Germer (offensive line) also joined the staff.
