With two snowboard superpipe contests determining which riders make the final cut for Olympic qualifying competition, spectators can expect riding to reach new realms of athleticism and creativity this week at Mammoth Mountain, Calif. The U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix moves to Mammoth for the second and third of five Olympic qualifiers beginning today.
Based on results from this week and last month’s Grand Prix competition at Copper, a select field of athletes will be invited to the two remaining qualifying contests Jan. 20-23 at Park City, Utah. There, the men will attempt to match the skills of reigning Olympic gold medalist Shaun White and his arsenal of cutting- edge tricks while the women will try to unseat Olympic medalists Kelly Clark and Gretchen Bleiler in a bid for four team uniforms.
