TEMPE, Ariz.—Arizona State has named well-traveled former New York Jets assistant Noel Mazzone its offensive coordinator.
Mazzone returns to Sun Devil Stadium, scene of his first touchdown pass as a quarterback at New Mexico.
Mazzone was wide receivers coach for the Jets from 2006-08 and served as a personnel consultant to the team this season.
He began his coaching career at Colorado State, then had stints at TCU, Minnesota, Mississippi and Auburn.
Mazzone spent less than one season on Erickson’s’ staff at Oregon State as running backs and special teams coach in 2002 before becoming offensive coordinator at North Carolina State in 2003.
He returned to Mississippi as offensive coordinator in 2005, then joined Eric Mangini’s staff with the Jets the next season.
Mazzone will call the plays, a task taken on by Erickson last season. The Sun Devils fired offensive coordinator Rich Olson after the 4-8 season ended.
