WASHINGTON — As millions converged on Washington last year for the inauguration of President Barack Obama, officials were concerned that extremists from Somalia were there, hoping to set off bombs as Obama took the oath of office, The New York Times reported on its website Monday.

The report says intelligence agencies worked around the clock trying to decide if the threat was real, and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, the only Cabinet member sworn in by Jan. 20, was spirited off to a secret location.

In the end, the report turned out to be false.
