DENVER—An Arapahoe County sheriff’s deputy has shot a man whose parents say he had held them hostage through the night.

Sheriff’s officials say 45-year-old Danny Barber is expected to survive. The deputy, whose name wasn’t immediately released, has been placed on leave pending an investigation into the shooting.

Authorities say a man called 911 Tuesday morning to report that he had escaped a home where his son had been holding him hostage but that his wife was still in the house.

A sheriff’s deputy and Colorado State Patrol trooper who went to the home were met outside by the suspect, who sheriff’s officials say may have been high on drugs. Sheriff’s officials say the suspect didn’t obey commands and was shot after allegedly attacking the deputy.
