TARPON SPRINGS, Fla.—Members of the Greek Orthodox community are expected to gather in west Florida to celebrate the annual Epiphany.
Services for Tarpon Springs’ 104th Epiphany celebration begin Wednesday morning. As part of the celebration, a white Epiphany cross will later be thrown into the Tarpon Springs’ Spring Bayou and teenage boys will dive into the water to retrieve it.
This will give the retriever a special blessing, which according to custom, will bring him prosperity all year. Last year, Pete Kontodiakos, a punter for Colorado State’s football team, pulled the cross from the bayou’s waters.
