WASHINGTON — Mountaintop coal mining — in which Appalachian peaks are blasted off and stream valleys are buried under tons of rubble — is so destructive the government should stop permitting it, scientists said in the journal Science.
The group, headed by a University of Maryland researcher, did one of the most comprehensive studies to date of the practice, also known as “mountaintop removal.”
“Until somebody can show that the water (that runs off) can be cleaned up … this has got to be stopped,” said Margaret Palmer of the university’s Center for Environmental Science. The Washington Post
