BOULDER, Colo.—The latest development in Xcel Energy’s smart-grid project in Boulder is an online program giving homeowners with “smart meters” the ability to track their energy use.
The utility says the new program allows all its 1.4 million customers to check monthly electrical and natural gas use online. The roughly 24,000 Boulder customers with meters providing two-way communication can track electricity use every 15 minutes.
The Minneapolis-based utility is working with other companies on a $100 million project to transform Boulder into a smart-grid city.
The goal is a system that provides better flow and use of electricity. Expected benefits include lower carbon emissions and better use of such power sources as wind and solar.
