Gov. Bill Ritter has requested federal disaster assistance for several Colorado counties where crops have been affected by drought and an early frost. Ritter sent a letter Friday to U.S Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack asking for the disaster designation to provide low-interest loans.
Fremont County received damaging frost and freezing temperatures in October, destroying apple crops.
Ritter’s office said various crops in Mesa, Montezuma, Dolores, San Miguel and Montrose counties were damaged due to drought at levels that qualify for disaster designation.
