Leif Kristian Haugen of the University of Denver won the men’s slalom at the Utah Invitational in Park City on Tuesday, and teammate Lindsay Cone was second in the women’s slalom, but the Pioneers could not overtake New Mexico in the team standings.
New Mexico has 467 points after the conclusion of the alpine events, followed by Denver (423), Utah (378) and Colorado (370). The invitational wraps up next week with two days of nordic races.
DU also got podium points from junior Andreas Kilde with a third. Colorado’s top skier was Erika Ghent with a third in the women’s slalom, won by Malin Hemmingsson of New Mexico.
Bull rider Lostroh second at Chute-Out.
Reigning world champion Kody Lostroh of Longmont placed second with 88 points in the second half of the first round of the Professional Bull Riders Denver Chute-Out at the National Western Stock Show.
Stormy Wing of Dalhart, Texas, won Tuesday night’s second half with 89 points. The overall leader, Reuben Yutzy of Dundee, Ohio, will sit out tonight’s second and final rounds because he fractured a vertebrae in Monday’s ride and will be out of competition for two months. The top 15 in the second round advance to the finals.
Otero to add men’s soccer.
Otero Junior College in La Junta said it will add men’s soccer to its roster of varsity sports, becoming the first junior college in Colorado to field the sport.
The Rattlers will play a 17-game fall schedule in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s south subregion against teams from Wyoming and Nebraska.
RMAC commissioner gets Metro Hall pass.
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference commissioner J.R. Smith is one of five individuals named to the Metro State Hall of Fame, along with the 1989-90 men’s basketball team that won the Roadrunners’ first conference title and first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Smith started his Metro career as a student assistant and ended it as an assistant athletic director. Smith was athletic director at Fort Lewis College for five years before becoming RMAC commissioner in 2001.
Also going into the Metro hall are Lee Barlow, who averaged 14.6 points for the Division II national champion men’s basketball team in 2000; Devon Herron, a two-time volleyball All-American (2002-03); Amy Leichliter, the top player on the women’s soccer national champions of 2004; and Ed Montojo, the women’s soccer coach from 1985-2000 who guided the Roadrunners to their first regular-season conference and conference tournament championships and first NCAA tournament appearance.
