A 33-year-old man currently serving prison time for felony menacing and escape has been charged with the sexual assault and attempted kidnapping of a woman in December 1998.

Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey filed the charges today against Anthony West.

West is accused of kidnapping a 17-year-old woman and then sexually assaulting her in the back of his car behind an apartment building in the 600 block of South Dayton Street, according to the Denver district attorney’s office.

She was able to eventually escape.

West was charged with attempted second-degree kidnapping, second-degree sexual assault, attempted first-degree sexual assault and third-degree sexual assault.

The case remained unsolved until the Denver Police Department’s Cold Case Review Team was notified of a DNA match that lead to the identification and arrest of West.
