The Rapids selected forward Andre Akpan, a two- time All-American at Harvard, and three other players Thursday in Major League Soccer’s SuperDraft.
Colorado traded its first-round pick and had back- to-back selections in the second round. With the 22nd overall choice, the Rapids took Akpan, the Crimson’s all-time leading scorer with 127 points. Colorado then took midfielder Ross LaBauex of Virginia, who had 10 goals and nine assists in 72 games for the Cavaliers.
In the third round, the Rapids selected Cal State Northridge defender Chad Borak, a two-time all-Big West Conference honoree. Forward Chris Cutshaw, a 32-goal scorer at Bradley, was taken in the fourth round.
Also, University of Denver defender Kris Banghart, a former standout at Fort Collins High School, was chosen by Real Salt Lake with the 64th and final selection of the draft.
Cey returns to Eagles.
The Colorado Eagles have named their replacement for goaltender Andrew Penner, who was called up to Springfield of the American Hockey League.
Moving into the net is Morgan Cey, who posted a 15-9-1 record and a 3.40 goals-against average with the Eagles last season. Cey had been working with the Northern Colorado Youth Hockey Junior Eagles at the NoCo Ice Center in Windsor.
