Whether you’re a Folgers or a Maxwell House drinker likely depends on whether you’re physically closer to San Francisco or Nashville, Tenn.

Brands are strongest in cities geographically closest to where they were first launched, according to researchers who studied 50 national brands.

That’s true even if other competitors have had more than a century to establish themselves in the market, according to the researchers from Tilburg University and the University of Chicago.

That means a Seattle household is more likely to drink Folgers, which launched in San Francisco in 1872. A Philadelphia household is more likely to drink Maxwell House, which began in Nashville in 1892.
