The season’s first avalanche death, just outside the boundary of Vail’s Blue Sky Basin last week, is a sobering reminder of how unforgiving the backcountry can be.
This chilling video of a burial and rescue shot from the perspective of a trapped skier near Haines, Alaska, offers an equally intense lesson, albeit with a happier ending. The video went viral in the backcountry community when it was posted last October, but it’s worth another look even if it still isn’t for the squeamish skiers and snowboarders among us.
