The U.S. Department of Energy has recommended a site in Andrews, Texas, as the preferred location for a proposed mercury-storage facility instead of Grand Junction, Democratic lawmakers announced Thursday.
The Mesa County site was one of seven the DOE considered for long-term storage of the hazardous substance. Other sites under consideration were in Idaho, Missouri, Nevada, South Carolina and Washington.
Rep. John Salazar, a Manassa Democrat, and Sens. Mark Udall and Michael Bennet praised the news that the proposed Colorado site, which had been opposed by Democrats as well as Republicans, appeared to be off the table.
