LA QUINTA, Calif. — Long-hitting Bubba Watson is using the wet weather to his advantage at the Bob Hope Classic. Watson shot a 10-under-par 62 on Friday to take a two-stroke lead over Alex Prugh after the second round, which began and ended in driving rain.
Watson hasn’t won on the PGA Tour, but he showed off an improved putting stroke and capitalized on wet fairways at SilverRock for a 29 on the front nine. He was at 16-under 128 after taking on the tournament’s two toughest courses in his first two rounds.
Prugh followed his opening 64 with a 66 on the Palmer Course at PGA West. First-round leader and Denver native Shane Bertsch (69) was at 13-under, along with Joe Ogilvie (66), Chad Collins (64) and Martin Flores (65).
• Tom Watson shot a bogey-free 9-under 63 to take a two-stroke lead over senior newcomer Fred Couples and Tom Lehman in the Champions Tour’s season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship in Kaupulehu-Kona, Hawaii.
• Rick Kulacz shot a 9-under 63 for a one-shot lead over Sergio Garcia (67—133), Shane Lowry (65) and Peter Hanson (67) after two rounds of the Abu Dhabi Championship in United Arab Emirates.
• Golfer Jim Thorpe has been sentenced to a year in prison for failing to pay more than $2 million in income taxes. Thorpe, 60, also was sentenced to two years of supervised release and 200 hours of community service. He must try to repay the taxes while on supervised release.
Cavaliers lose West to injury
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — Cleveland Cavaliers guard Delonte West will be out indefinitely after breaking his left ring finger in Thursday’s win over the Los Angeles Lakers.
• Portland Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy will miss four games because of a right hamstring injury.
Davis-White duo extends lead
SPOKANE, Wash. — Meryl Davis and Charlie White won the original dance to extend their lead over Olympic silver medalists Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Davis and White are 1.62 points ahead going into today’s free dance.
Americans win bobsled event
IGLS, Austria — U.S. Olympians Shauna Rohbock and Michelle Rzepka set the track record while winning the final bobsled World Cup event of the season.
Rohbock drove her two-person sled to the finish in 53.47 seconds, lowering the record of 53.53 set earlier in the day by German driver Cathleen Martini. Their two-run time of 1:47.13 gave the Americans their second victory of the season.
Martini and teammate Romy Logsch finished second in 1:47.44.
• Cross country skier Brian Mc- Keever was selected for Canada’s Olympic team, making him the first winter sports athlete to compete in both the Olympics and Paralympics. McKeever, who is visually impaired because of Stargardt’s disease, has won seven Paralympic medals, including four gold, with his brother Robin as his guide.
Bielema receives extension
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin extended football coach Bret Bielema‘s contract through Jan. 31, 2015.
