DENVER—A Colorado Republican who praised a conservative now accused of trying to tamper with a U.S. senator’s office phones is backing away from the suspect.

Rep. Doug Lamborn sent reporters a statement Wednesday saying that the alleged break-in at Sen. Mary Landrieu’s office in New Orleans was “unacceptable and wrong.” Lamborn was one of 31 House Republicans who co-sponsored a resolution last fall praising one of the men now accused of the Landrieu break-in.

James O’Keefe posed as a pimp for a hidden-camera expose that damaged the reputation of the liberal community-organizing group ACORN.

Lamborn and other Republicans issued a statement that they don’t condone the illegal prank attempt at Landrieu’s office.
