A employee at McGuckin’s Hardware Store in Boulder was cut and pepper-sprayed after confronting a shoplifter this evening, police said.
The employee’s injuries are not life-threatening. The accused thief was intercepted by police outside the store after the assault at about 5:40 p.m.
“Detectives are working to verify the suspect’s identity,” Boulder police said in a statement tonight,
The employee, described as a loss-prevention specialist, was treated at a local hospital. The alleged thief also sustained injuries and was treated at a hospital, before he was taken to the Boulder County Jail, according to the statement from police.
The confrontation started inside the store, when the alleged thief tried to walk out without paying for merchandise, police stated.
