Friday’s action in high school sports:
Girls basketball
PARKER — For the second consecutive Friday, Chaparral upset a marquee opponent. The No. 8 Wolverines eked out a 50-48 home win against No. 4 Regis Jesuit, using a superior perimeter game to tip the scales. Chaparral nailed seven 3-pointers compared to none for Regis in the Class 5A Continental League matchup, with sophomore Katee Hurlburt leading the way. Hurlburt hit four treys, including two in the pivotal fourth quarter. A week earlier, Chaparral knocked off then-No. 1 ThunderRidge. In between, however, the Wolverines endured a lopsided loss to new-No. 1 Highlands Ranch. Marquelle Dent led Regis with 14 points.
Arvada West 55, Green Mountain 51
ARVADA — The Wildcats took further control of the 5A Jeffco League by narrowly holding off their closest pursuer in the Rams (5-2 league). A-West is unbeaten in seven league games and has won 11 straight overall.
Highlands Ranch 71, Heritage 26
HIGHLANDS RANCH — The top-ranked Falcons are accustomed to dismantling foes, but this 45-point rout came against a quality opponent in the No. 9 Eagles. Center Kaitlyn McDaniel (26 points) equaled Heritage’s output by herself.
Rock Canyon 60, Rangeview 58
AURORA — Rangeview’s Jasmine Culbreath hit a shot in the lane with 7.4 seconds left to forge a 58-all tie, but Emily Leines won it for the Jaguars with a basket at the buzzer.
Boys basketball
Rock Canyon 65, Rangeview 63 (2OT)
HIGHLANDS RANCH — The squads appeared evenly matched with each entering with an 11-5 mark, so perhaps it was fitting that two overtimes were needed to hash things out. The Jaguars, ranked No. 10 in 4A, prevailed behind four double-digit scorers, including Jah Juan Lewis and Adam Sunshine (12 apiece), while Rangeview’s Yoshio Allen led all scorers with 16 points.
Peak to Peak 55, Kent Denver 50
LAFAYETTE — A day after falling out of the 3A rankings, the Sun Devils couldn’t upend the team that replaced them as J.P. Mile scored 16 points for the No. 10 Pumas. Lamar Blackwell had 12 points for Kent Denver.
Hockey
Summit 3, Ralston Valley 2
ARVADA — The Tigers jumped to a stunning 3-0 lead against the preseason No. 2 Mustangs, and goaltender Andrew Dunlap made it stand up despite allowing two power- play goals in the final 4:02 of the second period. Dunlap blanked Ralston Valley in the final period and finished with 32 saves. Summit jumped ahead with first-period goals by Shamus O’Neill and Evan Streit and extended the lead on a second-period tally by Sean Farley.
Air Academy 4, Pine Creek 3 (OT)
COLORADO SPRINGS — Despite outshooting the upset- minded Eagles 45-17, the Kadets needed Erik Behr’s goal with 36 seconds remaining in overtime to avert a draw. Adam Paiement and Conner Henricks each had one goal and one assist for Air Academy, with Henricks assisting on the winner. Eagles goal- tender Chris Dylewski stopped 41-of-45 shots.
Aspen 3, Monarch 2 (OT)
ASPEN — Milo Stark scored with six seconds remaining in overtime to propel the Skiers to a dramatic Foothills League victory. Monarch tied it 2-2 on a power-play goal by Brandon King with 5:35 to play in regulation, and the teams appeared destined for a tie until James Pardee and Coby Langley set up Stark’s winner.
