AURORA, Colo.—Aurora public schools officials are considering layoffs, spending freezes and cuts to cover an estimated $34 million-reduction in state funding over the next three years.

The list of potential cuts includes reducing the staff by 2.5 percent, reducing employees’ health insurance coverage by 5 percent and increasing classroom size by one student.

Schools Superintendent John Barry says the district will form an advisory committee to review the list and no proposed reductions are final. He says the district faces cutbacks in state funding of between $18 million and $20 million in the 2010-11 school year alone.

The teachers’ union says it will craft an official position on the recommended cuts during the next month.
