University of Denver freshman Simona Castro Lazo won her first collegiate event, scoring 9.850 to win the floor exercise at a quadrangular meet in College Park, Md., on Saturday, but the 16th-ranked Pioneers finished a disappointing third.
DU (6-2) was in first place after the first rotation, scoring 48.550 on the bars, then dropped to third after being forced to count two falls on the balance beam. West Virginia edged host Maryland 194.600-193.925, with DU at 192.50, followed by Rutgers at 190.550.
DU sophomore Brianna Artemev (Ralston Valley High School), the wife of 2008 Olympic bronze medal winner Alexander “Sasha” Artemev, tied for first on bars with a 9.800.
Belassi leads CU tennis victory.
For the ninth time in her college career, Colorado senior Camila Belassi clinched a team victory, edging Utah’s Paige Miles in three sets in No. 3 singles to give the Buffs a 4-3 women’s tennis victory in the consolation round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Berkeley, Calif.
CU (2-2) won the doubles point and got wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles from Monica Milewski and Melisa Esposito, respectively.
