DENVER—State senators are considering whether to raise taxes to balance the state budget.
They’re holding hearings on four of the proposals Wednesday.
The measures, already passed by the House, include charging 2.9 percent sales tax on candy and soda, junk mail coupons and plastic bags and napkins used for takeout orders. The fourth would eliminate a tax credit for hybrid car drivers next year.
Another hearing on the rest of the proposals is planned for Thursday.
Gov. Bill Ritter wants to raise about $150 million starting in March by ending or suspending 13 tax credits and sales tax exemptions.
Republican senators say they plan to introduce an alternative plan.
