HOUSTON — Coach Gary Kubiak agreed to a new contract that will keep him with the Houston Texans through the 2012 season according to two reports Tuesday.

The deal voids the last year of the five-year contract he signed when he joined the team in 2006 and is for the next three seasons according to the Houston Chronicle and Houston television station KRIV. Kubiak, who spent 11 years as Denver’s offensive coordinator before coming to Houston, told the two outlets he wanted this so his contract would end the same year as his assistant coaches.

McCarron apologizes to Mickelson

LOS ANGELES — Scott McCarron apologized to Phil Mickelson for using the word “cheating” when he disagreed with Mickelson and others who use the Ping Eye2 wedges that are only allowed because of a legal loophole. Whether that was enough to satisfy Mickelson, who said he had been “publicly slandered” and hinted at legal action, remained to be seen.

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem met with players at the Northern Trust Open and, according to one player, said the tour was working with Ping to figure out a solution.
