Denver-area grocery store workers who failed to approve a new labor contract in December will vote today on a similar contract offer.
In the previous vote, a majority of King Soopers workers approved the new deal, but most Safeway bargaining units turned it down.
The new contract offer is the same as the deal voted on in December, which provides wage increases of 25 to 30 cents an hour for journeyman workers, larger corporate contributions to underfunded pension funds, reductions in workers’ retirement benefits and signing bonuses of $150 to $1,000 upon ratification.
United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 and Safeway and King Soopers have agreed to transfer $12 million from the workers’ health-insurance plan to the retirees’ health plan.
Workers in bargaining units outside of metro Denver will vote on the new deal over the next two weeks.
