Firefighters from four fire departments have put out a fire that destroyed a home, leaving two people displaced early this morning.

The fire was reported at the house at 26th Avenue and Simms Street in Lakewood around 10:42 p.m. Tuesday. When the Wheat Ridge Fire Department arrived, the two residents had already escaped.

Firefighters found flames in the basement, but the fire quickly spread.

“The smoke and fire pushed us out of the basement. We tried to confine it to the first floor, but the fire got away. It went through the first floor to the second floor,” Wheat Ridge Assistant Fire Chief Bob Dowling said.

By 5 a.m. firefighters had extinguished the fire and were working to ensure there were no hot spots. There was no word on what might have caused the fire, but the home is considered a complete loss.

No one was injured.
