DENVER—Denver University forward Anthony Maiani had a goal and two assists to lead the second-ranked Pioneers to a 4-1 men’s college hockey win over Mercyhurst on Friday.

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association-leading Pioneers (13-4-4) took a 3-0 lead into the third period after goals by Chris Knowlton, Luke Salazar and Maiani. Grant Blakely scored the only goal for the Lakers (12-15-2) in the second and Joe Colborne wrapped up the scoring late in the third.

Denver’s Adam Murray had 32 saves and Mercyhurst’s Ryan Zapolski stopped 44 shots, including 16 in each of the first two periods.

Denver outshot the Lakers 48-33.
