Getting your player ready...

Texas women at Colorado, Wednesday, 7 p.m.

CU coach Kathy McConnell-Miller and her players are still looking for a signature victory this season, and the Longhorns, ranked No. 17, could provide that opportunity. The Buffaloes defeated Texas in the Longhorns’ last visit to Boulder, 67-52 in 2008.

Denver men at Middle Tennessee, Thursday, 6 p.m.

This begins a crucial two-game trip for the Pioneers, who are 0-5 in Sun Belt Conference road games. Denver also has a Saturday game at North Texas.

On the rise: Kyle Singler, Duke, junior forward:

This wasn’t expected to be a vintage Duke team, but the 6-foot-8 Singler is doing all he can to return the 10th-ranked Blue Devils to glory. Singler is averaging 16.6 points, including a career- best 30 points in a 19-point victory Thursday over No. 21 Georgia Tech. He connected on 8-of-10 3-pointers against the Yellow Jackets to continue a hot streak from long range. After Saturday’s win at Boston College, Singler is hitting .409 from beyond the arc (18-of-44) during a seven-game stretch and has reached 20 points in four of those.

Shooting stars

Second-half streak.

Da’Sean Butler, right, scored a season-high 33 points, hitting all seven 3-point attempts, and No. 6 West Virginia rallied for a 79-60 victory over St. John’s. Butler was 2-of-7 from the field in the first half; 7-of-11 after the break. “I don’t know about 3’s, but (coach Bob Huggins) wanted me to be aggressive,” Butler said.

Doubly productive.

Freshman DeMarcus Cousins had 19 points and 13 rebounds for his sixth consecutive double- double in Kentucky’s win over LSU. Cousins, who played only 20 minutes, is eighth in the country in double-doubles with 14, and 24th in the nation in rebounding.

Bricks and cold spells

Dry spell.

The California and UCLA women’s teams combined for just 22 points in the first half, with the Bruins missing their first 12 field goals before going on to win 44-32. Christina Nzekwe’s free throw with 10:06 left in the first put UCLA on the board, and after Cal jumped to an 8-0 lead, the Bears were held scoreless over the final 11:04 of the half. Cal’s 32 points were the lowest for a UCLA opponent since 1984.

Tweety goes cold.

Baylor guard Tweety Carter entered the Bears’ game against Texas A&M averaging 17 points but was held to 10 on 4-of-13 shooting from the field in a 78-71 loss.

On the bubble

Oklahoma State: Shaky in the saddle.

The Cowboys (16-7, 4-5 Big 12 after Saturday’s loss to Texas Tech) began last week with a solid RPI of 28. The problem is, they have the weakest credentials among the top eight teams in the Big 12, and the Big 12 has never sent more than six teams to an NCAA Tournament.
