Having grown up in Berthoud, I recognized the bronze statue located in Fickel Park. The homesteader seems prepared for anything, with his strong boots, warm shirt, hat and, of course, firearm. While getting water, he realizes that he should have put more forethought into his fence. He sees clearly now that a split rail will do absolutely nothing for keeping his horse in, or the very large rattlesnake out.
Many snakes like to spend their summer in my grass and around my garden bed, never failing to raise my blood pressure and give my children a laugh as I scream each and every time.
