Kelly Kulick, the first woman to win a PBA Tour title, will compete in the Bayer Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles event in Wheat Ridge next week.
Also competing will be Liz Johnson, who in 2005 became the first woman to bowl for a PBA Tour title. Johnson lost her bid against Tommy Jones in the Banquet Open that year.
Kulick and Johnson will be in a field of 32 of the best female bowlers. They will compete for 16 spots in the match-play finals, where they will be paired with the top 16 qualifiers from a field of 64 men.
DU lacrosse team ranked in top 20.
The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team, now coached by Bill Tierney, will start the season ranked No. 19 nationally, according to Lacrosse magazine.
In its February issue, the magazine says Tierney “inherits a darned talented team.” Joining the Pioneers in the poll is fellow Eastern College Athletic Conference member Loyola (Md.) at No. 16. Duke will enter the season ranked No. 1.
RMAC selects players of week.
Colorado Mines’ Brett Green was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s East Division men’s basketball player of the week. The freshman swingman from Peyton High School helped the Orediggers extend their winning streak to six games by averaging 26.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in wins over Colorado Christian and Colorado-Colorado Springs last week.
Mesa State’s Mike Dominguez was named the RMAC’s West Division player of the week for the fifth time this season. The senior guard from Santa Fe scored 35 points in an overtime win over Fort Lewis, the fourth game this season he has scored 30 or more.
• Colorado Christian’s Jodie Krall was named the RMAC’s East Division women’s player of the week. The junior guard from Solon, Iowa, averaged 15 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in wins over Colorado Mines and CU-Colorado Springs.
Fort Lewis’ Katie Mackey was named the RMAC’s West Division player of the week. The senior guard from Eaton averaged 17.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in road victories over Mesa State and Western State.
