Key DPL showdown:

It’s always big personally for the Carey family, a father-son coaching matchup, but Saturday’s 1 p.m. tipoff at the Thunderdome between East and Montbello is large for the Denver Prep League as well as all of Class 5A boys basketball. Rudy Carey’s East Angels, regular state challengers, began the regular season slowly but have climbed to 14-6. Son David’s Montbello Warriors (assisted by Rudy’s brother, Rick) are 18-2 and ranked No. 4. The winner will improve to 6-0 in the DPL with two games to play, and in prime position to land one of the state tournament’s top four seeds.
