A spacecraft that will study the sun was launched Thursday, powered by an Atlas V rocket provided by Centennial-based United Launch Alliance.

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Base in Florida. A $32 million instrument package developed by the University of Colorado at Boulder will measure how the sun affects Earth and equipment such as cellphones, satellites and power grids.
