A Colorado State Fair executive has been fired and is the target of a broad criminal probe involving activities spanning a “considerable period of time,” authorities say.
Janelle Gonzales, the fair’s former director of administrative services, was fired Feb. 4 after a two-week leave of absence, said Chris Wiseman, the fair’s general manager.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation, along with the Pueblo County district attorney’s office, will conduct a criminal investigation, Wiseman said Thursday.
“We are conducting our own independent investigation,” Pueblo District Attorney Bill Thiebaut Jr. said Thursday. “It’s a very important matter for our community and the state.”
Gonzales could not been reached for comment Thursday.
Gonzales oversaw the fair’s accounting department and negotiated contracts with promoters, Wiseman said.
