Midfielder Lexi Sanders had a hat trick, but the University of Denver women’s lacrosse team mustered little else on the offensive side and lost 16-6 to No. 5 Duke in Durham, N.C., on Friday.
The Blue Devils (1-0) and Pioneers (1-1) were tied 1-1 10 minutes into the match, then Duke went on a 7-2 run and led 9-3 at halftime. DU senior midfielder Ali Flury scored in the second half to extend her streak to 53 consecutive games with a point, the second-longest such streak in the nation. Sophomore midfielder Lauren Ciccomascolo had three assists for the Pioneers.
Mammoth adds defenseman.
The Colorado Mammoth signed veteran free agent defenseman Chris McKay, a five-year National Lacrosse League veteran who played the last two seasons in Edmonton and has 47 points and 395 loose balls in 63 career regular-season games.
McKay replaces rookie defenseman Matt Wilson on the roster. Wilson was placed on injured reserve after suffering a dislocated shoulder against Orlando.
Mammoth general manager and coach Steve Govett called McKay “a very intelligent defenseman who plays a smart, gritty game.”
